They say in politics, a week is a long time -
In the market it’s much the same and supply and demand can see prices fluctuate from one extreme to another!
- The warmer weather has increased supply of some lines while being detrimental for others. Grapes have enjoyed the heat and we are seeing the first of the true sultanas (Thompson Seedless) enter the market. Black Muscats, Currants, Natural Menindee, Black Sapphire, White Ivory, Cherry Punch and Cotton Candy grapes are all on the shelves right now.
- Cauliflower, broccoli, broccolini and most bunched lines have held higher prices this week but we expect that will be short lived and more moderate pricing should return next week.
- Sauce tomatoes have been available but quality has been marginal with good quality sauce tomatoes (the ones we buy) demanding slighter higher prices. This week we have the big polystyrene cases that weigh in somewhere between 16 and 18kg’s per box and selling for $36 so still pretty good value.
- Stone fruit is still of excellent quality and we even have Moorpark apricots and Sweet Georgia cherries out of Tasmania. Queen Garnet plums are now in and pricing is excellent due to huge crops.
- We have also started on our first new season apples, nashi and pears.
- Right now really is crunch time!
- Cheers, Dean
