Autumn is one of my favourite times of year for quality produce and a great variety.
It has been a couple of weeks since we have had time to do a market report and a lot has changed over those two weeks.
- We have seen the first of the new season Afourer Mandarins arrive as well as lots of new season apples and pears. Packham, bosc, gold nashi and Corella pears are now all available. New season apples now include; ginger gold, fuji, gala, and Kanzi. Next week we should also have the much-loved little missile apples available again.
- The first of the fresh chestnuts and walnuts have also hit our shelves.
- Of course, all good things must come to an end and while stone fruit is still good the season is coming to an end. Plums offer great value and lots of flavour choices, right now they are in peak season. We have fantastic blood plums, October sun, September candy, Angelino and the obscure Turtle Egg. The turtle egg plum looks green and uninviting but it is a real flavour surprise, so make sure you look past the colour and try a turtle egg.
- Brassica lines are still in very short supply, with broccoli, cauli and cabbage seeing quite dramatic price increases
- Iceberg lettuce has also seen a bit of a price jump as many growers are sending their stock to the Sydney market where the lettuce price is about 50% higher than Melbourne and in turn this has forced the Melbourne price up to compete with Sydney for stock.
- Overall, Autumn is shaping up to be an awesome season and hopefully the high prices on the brassica lines wont stay with us for too long
