Market Report 29 August 24

Mangoes have landed!

  • Last years mango season was quite disappointing both in supply volumes and quality issues due to late rain in the Northern Territory. Fingers crossed, this year will see better quality and bigger volumes which will hopefully result in some better prices as peak season hits.  Northern Territory Mangoes start first and then Queensland fruit comes in as we get closer to Christmas.
  • The rain in Queensland a couple of weeks ago caused a little jump in prices of a few lines, mainly beans, snow peas and zucchini supply shortened up causing a price spike.
  • Pumpkin, especially Jap pumpkin has also been very short in supply over the last two weeks.  Old season stock of Victorian pumpkin has come to an end and current supply is coming down from Kununurra.  Depending on the route taken it’s about a three-to-four-day journey at a rough cost of $25,000- for freight so this helps to explain why pumpkin is a little more expensive this time of year.
  • Cauliflower and broccoli are in good supply as are tomatoes and strawberries.
  • Famous Koo Wee Rup asparagus has also started and looking great. Price is currently still high but we will see the price fall as the season progresses and supply increases.
  • So, while a few lines are expensive at the moment there are plenty that offer great value. There are always plenty of great value lines on offer every week to help ease the pressure on your household budget.
