This year spring has been much drier than the last 2 years.
While that might sound worrying, it is actually
Good news for the stone fruit season!
- Cherries, apricots, peaches and nectarines all benefit from a fairly dry spring. It is the rain events that often damage the crops. This year it is certainly looking like an excellent season with high yields and excellent quality.
- Mangoes too are looking very good, something that growers are glad of, as last year was a wipe out for many of them due to high rainfall and humidity. Mangoes this year are of excellent quality and the higher yield means we are seeing great value for consumers.
- On the vegetable front we are seeing increasing volumes of tomatoes which is forcing the price down. Traditionally we see a jump in price in the lead up to Christmas but this year supply seems to be outstripping demand resulting in lower market prices.
- Broccoli has been fluctuating in supply and price. Most other vegetables are in good supply resulting in lower than usual prices for consumers. While this is not great for our growers it is helping out household budgets.
- If you are looking for something to do with your spare time we have already started with some sauce tomatoes and I think it will only be a couple of weeks until we have jam apricots available. Perfect timing for a home made gift for Christmas!
Fruitfully Yours, Dean
