Can you imagine being a grower and having your whole years work demolished by a single weather event that lasts just half an hour?
Unfortunately, it is a reality for our farmers and growers. The rain leading into Christmas and then again in the new year has been devastating for some with entire crops ruined or at least the quality marginalised
- High humidity played havoc with salad crops, English spinach, corn, beans, cauliflower and stone fruit. Supply is now improving but we really need a run of good weather before the overall quality of lines will improve.
- Asparagus supply has all but dried up with the price sky rocketing to $120 per box. So, its really a matter of just buying what you need at the moment as the rain has affected the longevity of the produce.
- In the next couple of weeks, we should see local (Gippsland) corn become available and the first of the new season pears have already started to appear.
- All of the berry lines have shown improvement in quality this week and if we can line up a few sunny days in a row this will only improve.
- So, a rocky start to the new year for our growers but as always, they keep working to deliver us the best they possibly can. Let’s hope this year blesses them with sunshine when its needed and rain and luck in equal parts.
- Cheers, Dean
