Market Report 11 December 23

It’s a tough couple of weeks to be a vegetable or fruit grower.......

The current weather conditions are playing havoc across the country and causing a raft of quality issues with produce.  Many vegetable lines have spent a couple of days under water with some areas receiving about 80mm in three hours

  • Spinach, silver beet and other bunch lines are the most affected.  While growers can often still harvest what looks like good produce, the increase in water content derails the shelf life and you will notice baby spinach and salad mix will not hold up as good as usual.  Our growers are not offering any returns so we are having to bear the cost of any returns ourselves.  For this reason, we are asking our customers to buy just what you need and pre order as much as possible as we will be trying to minimise our stock on hand so we can maintain maximum freshness.
  • Some stone fruit lines have also suffered as a result of the wind and rain but luckily this has been isolated and there is still plenty of good stock around.
  • Tomatoes, melon and pumpkin are all coming back in price while mangoes and asparagus have seen a sharp rise in price due to reduce numbers reaching market.
  • Berry lines are good value and strawberry growers are still producing good quality despite the challenges.
  • We also have some great quality very affordable jam apricots available at the moment, don’t miss the boat as the tide can turn quickly on supply.
  •  Hopefully the weather settles and supply and quality improve as we move into the last week before Christmas.
  • Cheers, Dean
